SkillBridge is an innovative learning platform that uses digital tools supported by artificial intelligence to provide continuous and dynamic support in the process of learning and self-development. The project was created to provide not only knowledge, but also the ability to use it in practice, solve complex problems and cooperate in diverse teams at the local level – from cities, through counties, to smaller communities.

Origins and Significance: When we started the SkillBridge project, our main goal was to create a tool that would help communities adapt to the rapidly changing educational and professional realities in the world. In the context of globalisation and intense demographic change, where societies are ageing and competition in the global labour market is intensifying, the skills acquired during education are becoming crucial for individual and collective success.

Laboratory equipment and infrastructure: SkillBridge offers modern equipment for specialized and interdisciplinary laboratories that are tailored to the specialization of schools and local development directions. Thanks to this, students can gain practical skills in conditions similar to real professional situations.

Multimedia and modern teaching methods: The COVID-19 pandemic has shown how effective multimedia can be as an educational tool, especially short, accurate video materials. SkillBridge meets this trend by offering materials that can be used by a wide range of students – including those who need to catch up. The platform allows you to create and distribute such content that is available to students at any time.

Digital assistants: A key component of SkillBridge is digital assistants, supported by Generative AI technologies, tailored to the needs of both teachers and students. For teachers, assistants can offer lesson plans and teaching materials, while for students, detailed explanations and step-by-step guidance through tasks and concepts.

Originally developed for the UK education system, the micro:bit is a small, programmable device that allows students to explore a wide range of fields in a hands-on way, from computer science to physics to mathematics to ecology.

This device is equipped with sensors such as a thermometer, compass, accelerometer and microphone, which enables the implementation of various educational projects. Thanks to programming languages such as MakeCode, Scratch or Python, the micro:bit becomes a great tool for introducing students to the world of coding, while integrating learning with practical application in everyday life.

It is also important that the micro:bit has ready-made teaching materials, including lesson plans and lesson plans, which makes it easy to implement and use in various educational contexts, both in Poland and around the world. The availability of such resources makes the micro:bit not only an inexpensive but also an effective learning tool that can replace traditional learning methods such as books or notebooks, offering students a more interactive and engaging learning experience.

The use of multimedia content in education is a response to contemporary challenges related to the acquisition of knowledge, especially among the young generation. Research indicates that short multimedia forms, such as 3-5 minute videos, are more effective at keeping students attentive and focused than long lectures. This is the result of both the influence of platforms like TikTok, which shape expectations about the speed and format of information delivery, and the general trends in the way the human brain processes information.

The advantage of short, multimedia learning content is its ability to attract and keep students interested, which increases the effectiveness of learning. Such materials, once created, can serve many classes and years, which is a significant saving of time and resources. Well-crafted, one-time recorded learning material provides high-quality teaching while allowing teachers to focus on the individual needs of students instead of repeating the same material over and over again.

In addition, adapting the content to the individual needs of students is possible thanks to well-cataloged and easily accessible resources. Students have the opportunity to choose the materials that best suit their needs, which in turn can significantly improve comprehension and assimilation. In the case of knowledge gaps, they can easily reach for content from previous years, which minimizes the frustration associated with gaps in understanding current topics.

A key aspect of the effective use of multimedia educational content is its integration with AI-based digital assistants. AI assistants, using advanced algorithms, can quickly direct students to relevant materials that answer specific questions and needs. There are many educational materials available on the market, however, a properly designed and integrated multimedia content system, supported by AI, ensures that students receive the most relevant and useful information, which is crucial in the dynamic and changing world of education.

4. AI Digital Assistants

Digital assistants in the SkillBridge platform are advanced learning tools powered by Generative AI technology that are designed to support teachers and students in the learning process. They use the global knowledge available through GPT algorithms and specialized information tailored to a specific group, school, or curriculum. This allows them to provide information and support that is precisely tailored to the current needs of users.

Digital Assistant for Teachers in the SkillBridge platform is an innovative tool supporting the teaching process, using Generative AI technology. Its main goal is to optimize the teacher’s work by automating and personalizing many aspects of teaching. Thanks to the assistant, the teacher will have less bureaucratic work and more time for students and to develop their own skills. Here is a list of the key functionalities that the assistant for teachers offers:

  1. Timetable Generation: The assistant automatically creates lesson plans tailored to the specific curriculum and specific needs of students, as well as offering suggestions for modifications based on feedback and test results.
  2. Customizing Teaching Materials: The assistant personalizes teaching materials, adapting the tasks and difficulty level of the content to better respond to the individual needs and pace of learning of students.

Based on Generative AI technology, assistant applications integrate with the local curriculum and use resources provided by the school, such as books and workbooks, offering a range of functionalities that significantly improve the effectiveness of learning:

Individual Difficulty Adjustment: The assistant analyzes the student’s level of knowledge and adjusts the tasks and educational materials so that they are adequate to their skills and developmental needs. This allows for a gradual increase in difficulty, supporting the continuous development of the student.
  2. Personalized Learning Paths: The assistant proposes personalized learning paths that take into account both the student’s current skills and their historical progress, which allows them to effectively make up for any deficiencies from previous years of learning and develop strength.

Implementation plan 

SkillBridge Platform Roadmap: Integrating and Advancing Educational Innovation

Phase I: Diagnostics and Strategic Planning

  1. Digital Maturity Audit:
    • Conducting a comprehensive technological audit in schools and other educational institutions, aimed at assessing the existing infrastructure, digital tools and IT competences of staff and students.
    • Identification of gaps and needs related to the modernization of technological and educational infrastructure.
  2. Analysis of educational strategies:
    • Evaluation of current curricula and teaching methods in the context of integration with modern educational technologies.
    • Work with local authorities and educational experts to understand specific regional requirements and expectations.

Phase II: System Design and Integration

  1. Defining Business and Technical Requirements:
    • Development of detailed functional and technical requirements for the SkillBridge platform, taking into account the specificity of local needs and the adaptability of the system.
    • Designing Generative AI use scenarios that will respond to the individual learning needs of different user groups.
  2. Selection of Suppliers, Technology Partners and sources of financing:
    • Conducting the process of selecting infrastructure and technology suppliers in order to ensure the best quality of services and products.
    • Establishing partnerships with local universities and research centres, supporting the development of research and educational innovation financed by the European Union.
  3. QuickWin and the SkillBridge Product-Specific Implementation Plan 
    • QuickWin: Implementation of development projects in the first school year, such as Astro PI – sending applications written by students to the ISS space station.
    • Planning regular implementations of SkillBrigne products that will benefit the local community without waiting for the project to end. 

Phase III: Implementation and Training

  1. System implementation:
    • Implementation of the designed infrastructure and SkillBridge solution, in accordance with the agreed project schedule.
    • Conducting tests and optimization of the system to ensure its full functionality and efficiency.

    • Organization of trainings for teachers and other users of the system, aimed at familiarizing them with new tools and methods of work.
    • Establish technical and educational support so that users can effectively use the platform in their daily work.

  1. Continuous Monitoring and Evaluation of Effectiveness:
    • Continuously track the performance and effectiveness of your SkillBridge implementation to identify areas for improvement.
    • Regular updates of software and tools in response to changing educational and technological requirements.

    • Conducting joint research and development projects with local universities and research centers, financed by the European Union, in order to further develop and improve the SkillBridge platform.

QuickWin Implementation Plan and Strategy

Ambitious projects take a long time to complete, but you don’t have to wait long for the first positive effects of SkillBridge. The SkillBridge project is implemented using agile methodologies in which frequent product implementations are planned, each of which can be put into the hands of target users and demonstrate the benefit of the challenges and investments undertaken. At SkillBridge, we want to show the positive effects of our work together in the first months of our work. An example of such an effective success can be the implementation of the Astro Pi Zero program in local schools. 

Introduction to Astro Pi Zero: Astro Pi Zero is an exciting initiative from the European Space Agency (ESA) that empowers young minds to explore space science through programming. Students have the chance to write their own Python programs, which are then run on Astro Pi computers on the International Space Station (ISS). ESA provides full didactic support, including ready-made lesson plans and educational materials in Polish, which makes it easier for local schools to implement this project.

Description Quick Win – Astro Pi Zero in schools: The first step in the implementation of our SkillBridge project will be the implementation of the Astro Pi Zero program in regional schools. This action aims not only to introduce innovative STEM education, but also to quickly and visibly demonstrate the benefits of implementing advanced educational technologies. Already in the first school year, thanks to the Astro Pi Zero program, students will have a chance to obtain certificates confirming the fact that the applications they wrote were launched in orbit around the Earth. 

Action plan:

  1. Teacher Training – Liki staff will conduct professional workshops for teachers, preparing them to run the program in future years.
  2. Introductory lesson for students – An introduction to the basics of programming on the Astro Pi and how to use an emulator that will allow you to practice hands-on without the need for physical hardware.
  3. Sending applications – Students, working in teams of two, will create applications that will be sent to ESA. Each of the applications will be launched on the ISS, which is not only scientifically valuable, but also incredibly motivating for young programmers.
  4. Certificates and Project Presentation – Each participant will receive a certificate with the date and exact geographical coordinates where the ISS was at the launch of their program. 
  5. Presentation – To conclude, students will present their projects by analyzing and visualizing the route that ISS has taken during the course of their application.

Benefits: Implementing the Astro Pi Zero program as part of the SkillBridge Quick Win project will not only quickly raise the level of technical education, but will also strengthen the region’s educational reputation by attracting new talent. Allowing students to interact directly with an international space project raises interest in STEM science and motivates them to continue to develop in these directions.
